Hero Story

As an AmeriCorps Member, Dorothy challenges stereotypes in so many ways, she is engaged in her community and active and energetic and is always learning new skills. Dorothy has touched over 1000 households in the past three years of service as an AmeriCorps member with CEDAM serving at Senior Neighbors. She has worked with the RSVP volunteers to help clients gather their data and access the Home Heating and Homestead Property Tax Credit refunds through the state of Michigan. She has increased awareness of their eligibility for these credits and reduced barriers to claiming the credits. She has done a little of everything from presentations to one on one assistance. Dorothy goes above and beyond to provide great customer service, she is relatable and trustworthy and has helped to develop processes that ensure this initiative will continue to succeed.

Dorothy is always willing to try something new. She believes in lifelong learning, pushing yourself outside your comfort zone, and embracing opportunities to learn new skills, try new things, and challenge herself. As an older adult herself, Dorothy was willing to be trained to lead exercise classes to other older adults, despite having no experience or background in that type of position. Trying to be active and healthy as we age is no easy task, and Dorothy was willing to make herself vulnerable in front of her peers, acknowledging that she needed to move more and learn new skills to help not only herself, but others make lifestyle changes to support physical activity.

Dorothy is never without a smile, a hug, and an encouraging word. She loves others freely and without boundaries, always lifting others up, and looking for ways to help them. Many of us are familiar with the imagery of throwing a pebble in the water and watching how the ripples expand. That’s Dorothy. The ripples she creates are unending. She touches lives in so many ways- from keeping people healthy to saving them money on taxes, to lifting them up.
