Hero Story
City Pickle is a nonprofit that uses pickleball to engage kids in active, social recreation while building confidence and teamwork skills. Since 2022, it has trained over 3,000 kids ages 5 to 17 across 10 Detroit locations through summer and after-school programs, led by founder Reid Jarjosa and a team of eight to ten volunteers. Reid travels weekly during the school year and daily in the summer to run two-hour sessions. City Pickle is the preferred partner with Detroit Parks and Recreation and Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan, which provides pickleball camps. Reid has been nationally recognized for his service with features in Birmingham Downtown Magazine, MLive, and a national magazine, as well as three grants from USA Pickleball, Franklin Sports, and Selkirk, the 2024 Presidential Gold Service Award, and back-to-back honors from Points of Light for his leadership in youth community service and social entrepreneurship. He has also assembled a board of advisors made up of community leaders from the City of Detroit to help grow City Pickle not only across the city and throughout Michigan, but into other cities as well.
