Hero Story
Janice Ross Banks has dedicated her life to service, embodying what it truly means to be a community hero. For over 20 years, she has volunteered in countless ways, always stepping up to help those in need. From serving with AmeriCorps in literacy programs, veteran support, and senior advocacy to now leading Looking at the Whole Picture Foundation, her impact has been felt across Metro Detroit.
Her service has touched hundreds of lives—whether helping over 100 veterans secure benefits, providing companionship and essential resources, or working to create stable housing for returning citizens and veterans. She has also directly helped teen mothers through her work with the Shirley Denise Housing Project, ensuring they have a safe place to transition into independence. Through her nonprofit, she has connected veterans and their families to critical resources, helped them avoid homelessness, and even provided personal items and furniture to support their transition into stable housing.
One of her most impactful projects is the creation of a Community Safe Space, where veterans and neighbors can gather and access books from the free “Little Library.” This space is more than just a project—it’s a testament to her belief in second chances and community connection. She also leads initiatives like Back-to-School Backpack Giveaways and the Adopt-a-Veteran Family Holiday Program, ensuring families have the essentials they need during difficult times.
Her service is special because it’s deeply personal—she doesn’t just offer resources, she builds relationships. I’ve watched her sit with veterans and listen to their stories, comfort struggling families, and advocate for those who don’t have a voice. Her passion for uplifting others never fades, and her work continues to inspire those around her to give back.
Janice Ross Banks is not just a volunteer—she is a force for change. Her work ensures that no veteran is forgotten, no family is left without support, and no community goes underserved. Seeing her selfless dedication firsthand has not only made me proud but has also shown me the true power of giving. She is beyond deserving of this honor, and I know the impact of her work will continue for generations to come.
