Detroit
Hero Story
Brian Davis has been mentoring with Winning Futures since 2014 and continues to make an impact on the lives of young men in Metro-Detroit. For the past 11 years, Mr. Davis has worked in Winning Futures school-based programs as a mentor to groups of young men as well as one-on-one mentoring for 11th and 12th grade students. During the school year, Brian took off work when he could not be allotted the time to volunteer through his employer, to ensure he had the capability to consistently be present for his mentee’s in workshops, field trips to sponsor companies, organized social events and award ceremonies. Along with showing up for the students during the school year, every year Brian is present for two mentor trainings hosted by the Winning Futures staff and contributes to the programming team's efforts to improve programs for student and mentor experience.
For Winning Futures, one of the biggest disparities that the organization faces is male mentor retention. To have someone like Mr. Davis who has remained with the program for over 10 years is an honor; Mr. Davis has aided in increasing the exposure of black male mentors. Brian doesn't just lead by example; he actively encourages his friends and colleagues to join him in mentoring, resulting in three mentor referrals who have since positively impacted the lives of many more students. His ability to inspire others to step forward and make a difference is a testament to his leadership and passion for community service. Brian's impact goes beyond the hours he dedicates; it resonates in the lives he touches and the ripple effect of kindness and mentorship he instills in others.
