Hero Story

For 10 years, Michigan Cares for Tourism (registered 501(c)(3) non-profit) have been a 100% volunteer, 100% give-back partnership where tourism professionals come together to help restore Michigan’s historic, cultural and natural attractions, learn about a Michigan tourism destination, and network across our industry segments to ultimately enhance the visitor experience, and be more engaged professionals in order to leave more lasting legacies at our cultural and historical sites around Michigan.

Our impact is within the restored parks, cultural and historical attractions that make Michigan one of the most sought-after tourist destinations. With funding limited for such projects and tourism increasing in Michigan, our organization helps bridge the gap to ensure our residents and visitors have quality and well kept cultural and historical sites to visit. We have generated $1.7 million in funding to cover equipment and supply costs for our projects, eliminating tourist sites from having to allocate funds from their general budget. Our coordinated volunteer efforts ensure adequate labor, further eliminating those costs from the project site. In one day, we can perform enough work to complete a years’ worth of projects.

Because we strive for the tourism industry to give back, our networking provides valuable knowledge sharing amongst tourism professionals in Michigan, furthering the industry’s and the state’s commitment to impactful and memorable tourism experiences which bring over $30 billion in revenue annually. Since our inception, over 5,000 industry volunteers have visited and restored over 16 locations around Michigan. Previous event locations have been, Porcupine Mountain State Park in Ontonagon, Cambridge Junction State Park in Brookly, Leelanau State Park in Northport, Fort Wilkins Historic State Park in Copper Harbor, CCC and Ram Center in Roscommon, The Felt Estate in Saugatuck, Sturgeon Point Lighthouse in Harrisville, Fayette Historic State Park in Manistique, Belle Isle in Detroit, Mill Park in Chelsea, Traverse City, Lime Island, Binder Park Zoo, Muskegon State Park and Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary. Our 2025 event will take place in Tawas City.
