Hero Story

Formerly the Detroit Institute for Children, Boldli is a non-profit organization that provides children with diverse abilities and their families the proper education, resources and materials needed for them to thrive as members of our community and make every day exceptional. Founded over 100 years ago, Boldli has evolved to address changing needs and now is a top servicer for special needs therapy and education.

Boldli offers screening, programming, education and clinical services for people with diverse physical, behavioral, cognitive and emotional abilities via family programs, community programs, school support and center-based therapy. Over 80 employees specializing in special education provide support services for individuals with diverse abilities aged 0-26. Boldli offers its programs and services through Family Programs, Community Programs and School Support.

Boldli’s Family Services programs include playgroups led by professionals that encourage children’s social interaction and educational development, along with early education caretaker support using the Parents as Teachers® (PAT) model. These services are available for children up to kindergarten.

Last year, Boldli held weekly PAT Group Connections sessions at five different PAT Group Connection sites through their partnership with Brilliant Cities. PAT Group Connections focus on parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being topics. The sessions help parents recognize when interventions and supports are needed and give them the tools needed to take appropriate steps with the help and guidance of a Parent Educator.

In addition, Boldli provided more than 80 home visits, developmental screenings and assessments, and hearing and vision tests to families in need.

Boldli Community Programs include after-school tutoring support and summer day camps. Boldli’s summer camp is held at three locations and includes teletherapy. Over the course of five weeks, 54 children participate per year. Both after-school tutoring and summer camp programs are available for students up to the fifth grade.

During the 2022-2023 school year, 100% of participating students showed an increase in homework completion, submitting assignments, and saw improvements in English and/or math performance. Their summer camp conducted 205 sessions, totaling 112 service hours of speech and occupational therapy via teletherapy, and over 1,680 service hours via in-person care. Additionally, each student received one book per week for five weeks, allowing Boldli to distribute 440 books.

Boldli School Services are available in 192 K-12 schools, Head Starts, and Early Childhood programs across Detroit, Southeast, and West Michigan, with Detroit and Wayne County home to 150 of these locations. Schools that utilize Boldli’s services enroll over 49% of Michigan’s special needs students.

Boldli partners with public, private and charter school districts to bring certified, highly-skilled special education professionals into their classrooms. Boldli offers consultation, observation, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, evaluations and screening services.
