Hero Story
It is with great enthusiasm that I nominate Yara Shadda, Secretary and Community Engagement Strategic Initiative Group (CESIG) Leader at the Michigan Immigrant and Refugee Council (MIARC), for the Governor's Service Award. Yara’s work has not only made a significant, lasting impact on individuals and communities we serve but has also served as an inspiring example of leadership, service, and dedication to creating equitable opportunities for all in our great state of Michigan.
Yara’s leadership in organizing and facilitating a community-centered event in 2024, which brought together over 200 students, parents, educators, stakeholders, and community partners, is a testament to her ability to address complex issues while fostering collaboration. The focus of the event was to provide education on critical financial literacy topics, particularly surrounding educational resources to immigrants and refugees in the state of Michigan. By connecting individuals from diverse backgrounds with the resources and knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of education financing available through the state, Yara empowered countless individuals to make informed decisions about their educational future along with their parents. This initiative has produced lasting change by equipping families and communities with the tools to secure a better future for themselves and their children.
Beyond the tangible outcomes of this event, Yara has continually demonstrated her commitment to uplifting others through her work at MIARC. As CESIG Leader, she has created a network of support and community engagement for immigrant and refugee communities, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met. Her efforts have extended far beyond event coordination, advocating for mental health, educational equity, access to resources, and fostering connections between individuals who might otherwise have never had the opportunity to collaborate.
What sets Yara apart is her unwavering passion for service and her ability to inspire others to contribute to meaningful causes and let their light shine. Her leadership has encouraged others to volunteer, serve, and give back to their communities in ways that they may not have thought possible. She leads by example, demonstrating how one person’s dedication can ripple out and motivate an entire community to engage in positive action. Yara’s unique approach to community engagement, which combines education, outreach, and empowerment, is deserving of recognition as it addresses immediate needs while laying the groundwork for long-term transformation.
Yara Shadda’s contributions are a shining example of what it means to serve with purpose and impact. Her work is not just about the events she leads, but the lasting relationships she fosters, the hope she instills in others, and the tangible change she creates in her community in Michigan. Her tireless advocacy and strategic approach to community engagement make her more than deserving of the Governor’s Service Award.
Thank you for considering Yara Shadda for this prestigious recognition.
