Hero Story

MWEA, established in 1925, is one of Michigan's oldest organizations. Our vision is to continue to be a recognized authority on and advocate for Michigan’s water resources. MWEA represents more than 2,000 water quality professionals statewide who are dedicated to preserving, restoring and enhancing Michigan's water resources. MWEA volunteers are professionals from all aspects of the water environment including wastewater plant operators, engineers, equipment suppliers, consultants, regulators, environmental attorneys, municipal, regional, state and even national decision makers, educators, watershed managers, and more. MWEA is a member association of the Water Environment Federation (WEF), an international organization with more than 34,000 members worldwide.

As a water sector leader, the mission of MWEA is to provide bold leadership, champion innovation, connect water professionals, and leverage knowledge to support clean and safe water.

MWEA members have been working collaboratively to protect Michigan’s water resources for nearly 100 years. The organization supports water professionals and clean water advocates by providing quality education, specialized training, technical certifications, and platforms for innovation, advocacy, communication, and networking. Through coordinated collaboration, our outreach and impact extends beyond water professionals to communities, teachers, students, decision makers, and indeed to all Michiganders. The impact MWEA and its members have is multiplied when these qualified and passionate water professionals serve their communities with innovative and sustainable infrastructure solutions that result in affordable, clean, and safe water and sanitation. Water quality is the number one priority when it comes to sustainable communities that support good health and wellbeing.

In addition to the impact on water professionals and communities, MWEA volunteers are committed to public & youth education and outreach. Youth education is critical to creating a future public that is informed, aware, and connected. As one of many examples, for more than a quarter of a century, MWEA has worked in partnership with the Michigan Teachers Association to provide the Dan Wolz Clean Water Education Grant. This grant provides funding for Michigan Science Teachers who seek to improve the quality and quantity of clean water education in school curriculum.

It's difficult to quantify the impact of 100 years of service, but MWEA’s volunteers have always given generously of their personal resources including time, money and expertise to protect water resources, locally, regionally, nationally and even internationally. Water is a global resource. Here in Michigan, we have the responsibility for protecting two-thirds of the world’s fresh water; a responsibility recognized and embraced by the volunteers of the MWEA.

The provided photo is not one of the MWEA staff or board. Rather, we are submitting a photo of our members working hard at their day jobs to protect our water resources. Many don't realize the significant work and dedication that our members put forth every day to provide safe, clean water and sanitation, sometimes putting their own safety at risk. Clean water is a privilege that should not be taken for granted.
