Hero Story

In the vibrant mosaic of our community, where many colors blend to create a beautiful whole, one particular shade stands out for its vibrancy and dedication—Arjun Saini. At just 17 years old, Arjun exemplifies a commitment to service that not only illuminates his character but also ignites a spirit of generosity in those around him. It is with great enthusiasm and pride that I nominate Arjun for the Governor’s Youth Volunteer of the Year Award, especially for the impact he is making through his newly founded non-profit – MPower All.

Having had the privilege of knowing Arjun since age 13, through his extensive work with MICS(Board of Michigan Indian Community Services), ASF(CEO-Abhi Shah Foundation), and now as a Board chairman of his newly founded Mpower All, I am continually inspired by his journey and achievements. His story of commitment and leadership began in the 7th grade when he witnessed his mother's dedication as a healthcare worker during the COVID-19 pandemic. This experience sparked his initial involvement in the NNMI mask initiative, where he became one of the youngest leaders, distributing over 15,000 KN95 masks to combat severe PPE shortages in partnership with prestigious institutions like the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. His journey in leadership reached new heights when he secured first place in an international FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) competition, where as a proud Detroiter, he led his team to victory by an innovative recreation of Detroit Metro Airport on Minecraft garnered significant acclaim and fostered new connections.

Arjun's early experiences paved the way for further engagement in community services, leading him to found ‘Mpower All’. This organization focuses on empowering individuals of all ages, celebrating seniors' accomplishments, and supporting youth through various initiatives like student symposiums, Peach march against gun violence after MSU shootings and unique pet drives. With impacting over 2500 volunteers and 26 initiatives, Mpower All has become a beacon of community empowerment, showcasing Arjun’s ability to understand and address broad community needs spanning academic, cultural, medical, and compassionate domains.

MPower All is today’s first Michigan organization that has created both a high school and middle school board exemplifying Arjun's commitment to instilling leadership and compassion in the youth early on. His leadership has led to significant initiatives, such as the largest used Indian clothing drive to date, involving over 20 organizations and distributing 17,000 lbs of clothing across essential sites like homeless shelters and refugee camps. Additionally, his efforts in organizing opportunities for youth to participate in health fairs and continuous medical webinars cater to the ongoing health needs of seniors, is truly admirable. A recent unique Pet drive was a fun initiative his team organized where over 1000 lbs of food was collected and is set to be delivered on May 11th at the Howell Nature center and Humane society of Huron Valley.

Arjun's leadership style is particularly noteworthy for its inclusiveness and attention to detail. He advocated for Gun violence at a Peace March, in Canton against Gun violence after MSU shootings and also advocated for global pressing issues against mental illness at Legislative day at The Capitol Building, Lansing. The nonprofit also launched the MPower to Lead program which highlights the importance of youth learning directly from the professionals they aspire to be one day. He empowers others by giving them the autonomy to lead projects while ensuring that all crucial aspects are meticulously addressed. He advocates that every minute detail is perfected, a key factor behind the success and a key idea that drives Mpower All forward.
Arjun’s leadership style is characterized by humility and a focus on enabling others to excel. His organization of financial literacy webinars, including the introduction of a stock market game, exemplifies his commitment to educating his peers on crucial financial concepts. Though he moderated the event, Arjun devoted countless hours to its meticulous planning, ensuring participants could fully engage with and understand the complexities of financial markets. This initiative highlights his philosophy of empowering others by paving a path full of opportunities.

Arjun's latest addition to the Mpower All initiative is the MPower Innovation Summit set to take place on June 30, 2024. This new event aims to empower young people by offering them a stage to represent their school projects or research, with opportunities for recognition through publications or awards. Arjun ensures that all participants understand there is still hope and value in their efforts, regardless of whether they win an award. It also encourages participation from undergraduates and college students. Beyond this, Arjun continues to create opportunities for his peers to lead monthly digital workshops for seniors and as he is diligently helping organize community wide medical health fairs. His approach to leadership—emphasizing empowerment and meticulous behind-the-scenes planning—sets a high standard for others to follow.

What sets Arjun apart is his comprehensive approach to volunteerism and leadership. His capacity to organize youth teams to orchestrate major initiatives such as the clothing drive and mask distribution during a global crisis, combined with his commitment to create future leaders while he is himself a youth, is both unique and impactful. In nominating Arjun Saini for the State Youth Volunteer of the Year Award, we recognize not just the profound impact of his volunteer work, but also his ability to lead, inspire, and transform. It is young leaders like Arjun who remind us that the power to make a difference lies within each of us, but needs to be instilled at an early age.
As you consider this nomination, I urge you to see not only what Arjun has achieved but what he inspires others to achieve. His story is one of hope, leadership, and the relentless pursuit of a better tomorrow. Let us honor his dedication and encourage him to continue his admirable journey.
