Hero Story

Masco’s commitment to corporate citizenship began with the generosity of our founder, Alex Manoogian. A refugee of the Armenian Genocide who arrived in America in 1920 with only $50 to his name, he promised himself that if he found success in this country, he would ensure others had the same opportunities to grow and thrive. The company was founded in 1929, and in 1952, the company began a formal program to give back, at that time specifically supporting employees who had served in the war.

Masco has made a significant financial impact over the last 70+ years to hundreds of nonprofits in southeast Michigan. Throughout this time, our longstanding local partnerships have resulted in over $13 million donated to the Detroit Institute of Arts, over $6 million to Detroit Public Television, over $4 million to The Henry Ford, and over $3 million to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, just to name a few.

Today, we remain as committed as ever to serving our community. In addition to over $5.3 million given from our corporate office to nonprofits across the U.S. and Canada in 2023, we continue to support our employees’ passions for community service. Through group volunteer events with Habitat for Humanity Detroit, MCHS Family of Services in Redford, Life Remodeled, and more, we bring employees to work on-site with impacted nonprofit partners. Our employees volunteer their evenings and weekends to attend fundraisers on behalf of our partners like First Step and the Living and Learning Enrichment Center. We further support our employees’ charitable passions by offering our corporate Matching Gift Program, which donates additional hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to nonprofits across the country, including many in Michigan. In 2023, for instance, this totaled over $375 thousand in matching funds. And through our Dollars for Doers program, we offer charitable grants in the names of our employees who volunteer their personal time with nonprofits.

While we have a hybrid work model at Masco HQ, our five “Connection Days” each year leverage the presence of employees to engage in service projects or hear from our nonprofit partners. We also make our office space available to our nonprofit partners for meetings and events to maximize the impact we can have with them.
