Hero Story

The Priority Health Total Health foundation has been in existence since only 2020 as a result of the merger between Total Health Care, the longest serving HMO in Detroit, and Priority Health, Michigan’s fastest growing health plan. The mission of the Priority Health Total Health Foundation is to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of Detroit by investing in nonprofit organizations dedicated to serving the needs of the community.
So far over $14 million have been granted to 73 nonprofits who are working to change lives in the most vulnerable and marginalized communities in Southeast Michigan.
Details about all the organizations are too many to list but some examples are the Pureheart Foundation which identifies and works with a population that lives with daily shame–children of incarcerated parents. This lifechanging program provides an after school program and monthly field trips to offer mentorship, academic support, and opportunities, as well as visits with the incarcerated parent. In the nine years of its existence 100% of the participants have graduated from high school.

DLIVE is another grant recipient that works within the hospital at Sinai Grace in one of the most violent neighborhoods in Detroit. The Priority Health Total Health Foundation partners with DLIVE to work with victims of intentional trauma like gunshot wounds who come through the ER in an effort to change their life trajectory. These individuals are offered mentorship, counseling, and everyday help like getting a drive'rs license and completing their education.

Figure Skating in Detroit received two separate grants from the Priority Health Total Health Foundation where figure skating instruction as well as competition is offered to school-aged girls of color who normally would not have access to this sport. The ice skating instructions is bolstered with academic support, mentoring, and leadership and builds confidence and fortitude in these young girls who previously would be left out of this activity.

The Priority Health Total Health Foundation recognizes that health and well-being are a lot more than just visiting a doctor regularly but are also influenced by the Social Determinants of Health like where one lives, what they eat, what their environment is, and their level of education, as well as family situation.

Each quarter six to seven Detroit area nonprofits who are working to combat food and housing shortages, marginalization, vulnerable populations, literacy, and other issues that plague Detroiters receive generous grants to further their important work that is helping to change individual lives in Southeast Detroit.
