Saline

Hero Story

In 2016, Jim supposedly retired and then moved to Michigan for improved quality of life. He almost immediately became involved in improving the quality of life for older adults, especially persons living with dementia and their care partners. As a volunteer community educator for the Alzheiner’s Association, he has presented well over 200 classes and presentations on dementia, caregiving and his personal (16 years and counting) caregiving journey with his wife living with Younger Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. His talks have reached and helped thousands of Michiganders deal more effectively with dementia. As Jim says, “We can’t cure it, but we can do something about it”.
In 2020, Jim established the non-profit Dementia Friendly Saline, which got Saline recognized as Michigan’s second, ( and currently its most active), dementia friendly community, working to help persons dealing with dementia live in the community with less difficulty and more dignity. Besides spreading its dementia friendly message to other communities around the state, Dementia Friendly Saline has also pioneered several dementia quality of life programs, most notably the first in the US Dementia Friendly Movie Program, held at Saline’s Emagine Theatre, and now spreading to other communities in Michigan and other states.
