Hero Story

Noah is a passionate citizen and student committed to helping those throughout Southeastern Michigan by pursuing the United Nations Sustainability Goals of Zero Hunger, Quality Education, and Reduced Inequalities.

ZERO HUNGER:

Noah started volunteering at the Bountiful Harvest Pantry in Brighton, Michigan in 2023. He supports the pantry and the patrons in any way he can; including preparing hot meals, picking patron orders, processing donations, and restocking. To date he has served 147 hours.

Noah also serves on Kroger Corporation’s 15-member Zero Hunger Zero Waste Youth Advisory Council for the 2023-24 school year. Along with his participation in the council, he has received a grant of $500 to execute his own Zero Waste initiative. With the funding, Noah will implement a Zero Waste Composting initiative at the Bountiful Harvest Pantry. This program will reduce pantry waste and make compost available so the pantry and its patrons can grow their own vegetables and produce.

QUALITY EDUCATION:

Noah also exploits his proficiency in Japanese and Mandarin to help teach English as a Second Language. He has done this by serving as a Small Group Leader at the Prince of Peace (POP) Church in Farmington Hills and previously as a Conversation Partner at the Oak Point Church in Novi. Since 2022, he has accumulated 34 hours with the POP ESL program. Between 2020 and 2021, he amassed 72 hours helping members of the Oak Pointe ESL program.

REDUCED INEQUALITIES:

In an effort to reduce inequalities, he actively works to promote cultural awareness in Southeastern Michigan. Being a dual citizen of the USA and Japan, Noah is committed to increasing awareness of Japanese culture in his community. He does this by supporting the Japanese Business Society of Detroit (JBSC). Specifically, he teaches visitors to the fall Japanese Cultural Festival in Novi and the Hinamatsuri Girls' Day event at the Detroit Institute of Detroit in the spring. He has supported this effort since 2022 and contributed 28 hours toward his efforts.

To further pursue his commitment to making the world a better place, Noah is committed to developing a far-reaching cohort of like-minded individuals. He has done this by pursuing and participating in Global Philanthropic Engagement forums such as:

1) Participating in the Experiment in International Living Digital Leadership & Community Service Scholars Program during the summer of 2023. This program has allowed him to study leadership, community organization, and action planning with peers from the Middle East and Northern Africa.
2) Noah has also been accepted into and will attend the 2024 Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) program in New Haven, CT this summer. During the 2-week program, he will collaborate with a cohort of like-minded students from around the world focusing on Solving Global Challenges.
