Bowling Green

Hero Story

Christina Igl has served the Michigan community in many capacities throughout her life, but the most outstanding and notable is her AmeriCorps work from the years 2017-2019. While working with AmeriCorps, Ms. Igl assisted with grant writing that earned over $36,000 in funding and donations for College Access programming for the community she was serving in Muskegon, Mi. While there, she developed strategies aimed at increasing the number of underrepresented students completing at least one college application (increased from 88% to 100%) and FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) completion (increased from 64% to 100%). While Serving in Muskegon, she was responsible for the matriculation of 103 high school seniors. The progress in establishing a culture of students continuing education after their High School diploma has continued in the years since Ms. Igl's service in the local community has ended.

Ms. Igl worked in a public high school during her years of service and established a strong college-going culture at Holton High School by building and maintaining relationships with students (K-12), parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators. She even supported team building and student growth by volunteering as the head Varsity Bowling Coach (Men’s & Women’s) and hosting in the MHSAA Regional Bowling Tournament. At the same school, Christina Igl coordinated High School National Honor Society meetings, service projects, and promoted service opportunities for high school students in the community (blood drives, town clean ups, etc.). This promoted a larger sense of community and service in the community at large.

While working closely with the public school population, Ms. Igl also worked with the larger Muskegon community. While living there, she partnered with local organizations such as Muskegon Opportunity, Muskegon Area Career Tech Center, and Community Foundation for Muskegon County to increase college awareness and affordability in Muskegon county and the town of Holton. She worked with adult English Language Learners to promote their language skills. She developed lesson plans that were individualized to each learner's goals and skill levels by incorporating visuals and tactile materials into instruction. She also coached adult learners through the citizenship test preparation process, directly helping future citizens gain knowledge and confidence in their transition to citizenship.
