Hero Story

Michigan Humanities is one of the 56 state and territorial humanities councils funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities. We are committed to promoting and supporting humanities programming throughout Michigan that explore, strengthen, and celebrate the stories, histories, and cultures of the people in our state.

Through our programming and grant-making, we seek to partner with diverse organizations from all sectors in Michigan: urban and rural, socio-economic backgrounds, ethnic, gender, and racial identities, and targeting different ages, focusing on our mission of “bringing people together through stories, histories, cultures, and conversations.”

Since Michigan Humanities was first created, we have been a touchstone for Michigan’s cultural programming. More recently, Michigan Humanities prides itself on being an introductory granting agency for grassroots humanities organizations that may be unexperienced writing grant applications, or running their own programming, and would benefit from an organization who is willing to offer capacity building. Michigan Humanities strives to be that organization. We enjoy making partnerships with smaller organizations, offering advice on grant applications prior to submission and working collaboratively to create humanities programming.

A recent example of this was our Michigan Museum Recovery Grant program in 2022. Museums were struggling after the pandemic, and Michigan Humanities wanted to offer support and ended up doing a grant opportunity specifically for Michigan museums. Michigan Museum Recovery Grants offered up to $10,000 of general operating support, programming support, or a combination of both to Michigan-based museums. Michigan Humanities granted $130,000 in grants to 32 Michigan-based museums.
