Hero Story

It is with great pleasure that I nominate Pam Maas for the Michigan Heroes Award in recognition of her exemplary volunteer efforts with Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency’s (NEMCSA) emergency food program. As a devoted and tireless volunteer, she has made a monumental impact on the lives of low-income seniors and families across NE Michigan.

Pam has been a volunteer with NEMCSA’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program since July 2021. In that time, she has provided nearly 70 hours of service to the emergency food programs at the agency, not including other areas of community service in the region. In her time with NEMCSA, she has become a valued member of the team. She works alongside staff in the food warehouse helping to maintain an organized inventory and prepare and pack commodity food items to be shipped out to low-income seniors across twelve NE Michigan counties. In addition, she personally hand delivers needed boxes of food to home bound seniors who cannot make it to scheduled pick up locations. Her support and hard work have helped fill in gaps with agency staff during sick time as well as vacation, ensuring there is no drop-in service for the community. Pam has undoubtedly impacted the lives of thousands of community members across the region.

Pam’s extraordinary work has bridged the gap between need and assistance, ensuring seniors receive nutritious meals and emotional support. She works diligently, coordinating with the emergency food program staff and volunteer coordinator, to facilitate swift and efficient delivery of essential commodity food items to home bound seniors across the region. Consistently, she goes above and beyond to ensure no senior in need is left behind, exemplifying empathy and stewardship. Her kind words, smile, and uplifting spirit are often the only personal contact home bound seniors may have for that week.

Pam’s passion for service has not only alleviated the burdens of many struggling seniors but also sparked a notable increase in community participation. She has proven indispensable in inspiring others to contribute to the program, fostering a stronger sense of community togetherness and social responsibility.

Pam has continually displayed resilience, an unwavering spirit of volunteerism, and an intrinsic desire to ensure the wellbeing of those most vulnerable in our society. These commendable attributes undeniably deserve the label Michigan Hero.
