Gro-Town

Grosse Pointe Woods

Hero Story

Since 2019, Danielle Carlomusto and Gro-Town has distributed 28,000 seed packets to the next generation of gardeners throughout Metro Detroit and Wayne County in public libraries and community centers. Each Spring, the Gro-Town "Seed Stations" appear in Detroit Public Library locations across the city. Each Gro-Town Seed Station contains 150 – 200 packets of vegetable, herb and flower seeds that children can choose to take home and plant their own garden. Gro-Town has been encouraging children and their families to discover gardening, grow their own healthy vegetables, learn where food comes from, and nurture the natural curiosity of young kids. Every year, the program is a success and the library seed stations have to be constantly restocked to meet demand. Through Gro-Town, kids learn about the world around them as well as their communities and neighborhoods, by participating in story times, original music, and "vegetable petting zoos" at public libraries. Gro-Town aims to inspire the next generation of gardeners.
