Hero Story
Nancy Winzer began working for the city in 1993 and became director of the Parks and Recreation Department in 2010. She is responsible for both refurbishing and overseeing parks in the local communities, which amounts to 26 parks and 15 other facilities. She also has overseen the cemetery and forestry departments. In 2016, Winzer was also given management of the McMorran place in downtown Port Huron. Winzer and her team have brought more than $3 million in grants and donations to the city and have renovated numerous parks such as Lakeside Beach, Sprout City, and Palmer Park.
While being director and working with the staff, Winzer has provided fun activities targeting people of many age groups in the local community. Some of these activities include the band and music event known as Rocking the Rivers, walking events to promote exercise and being in nature, daycare for children, and more. The Parks and Recreation Department even let children come volunteer, and Nancy has created fundraisers to help update park equipment as well. Even through the pandemic, they provided virtual storytelling videos to children and other fun opportunities to keep children engaged.
Nancy Winzer was named Blue Water Woman Civic Leader of the Year in 2018 for her diligence and success to the local families and communities she has touched, and she has even had an article written about her as well. Along with Celina Grondin, SC4’s women’s golf coach and director of institutional research, Winzer co-chairs the newly launched SC4 Michigan Promoters of Women’s Equal Rights in Sports (SC4 MPOWERS) group, which was designed by St. Clair County Community College to support and advocate for women coaches and athletes.
