Mark Daniell
Chesterfield
Hero Story
Mark has been the owner and operator of Michigan Driving School for 25 years. While he is a business owner, being financially compensated for his work does not matter to him. He consistently provided free adult driver's training to those individuals who cannot afford to pay for the service. As a Detroit at Work employee, I've sent many individuals (all welfare recipients) to Mark for driver's training. Per our Detroit at Work policy, we may only offer participants $500 in funding for driver's training. These provides about 10 hours of driving lessons. Individuals who have never driven before need at least 30-40 hours of training. Although we can only pay for a fraction of this cost, Mark continues the driver's training of all individuals we send to him until they are able to pass a road test and acquire a license. He provides a countless number of hours to free driver's lesson and ensures that all individuals he works with are heard, given compassion and provided with the autonomy that being able to drive provides. Mark has bought appropriate driving shoes for a woman who only owned slippers, he purchased a vehicle for a young woman who needed one, and he even sent a stranger through nursing school after he learned she had a desire to become a nurse. These are just a few of his many great deeds and a small example of his service to the common good.
