Nidhi ikkurthy is president and cofounder of MYVA organization (Michigan youth volunteering alliance) that was started in 2020 . As a teen she felt that during pandemic her social connection was reducing and she was more engaged in electronic devices .She found MYVA with hope to achieve the goal of engaging the youth and tapping their potential so she could increase social connection and compassion for youth and at the same time fight hunger and help kids and senior citizens in local community. Through MYVA she also helps youth volunteers to enhance their teamwork and leadership skills. This will aim to bring a positive change to the lives of citizens in the community as a whole.
She leads and coordinates multiple weekly food rescues and meal delivery in collaboration with local restaurants like Panera Bread , Gotwings and deliver at no cost with help of youth volunteers to local churches like “Open hands pantry in St John’s Episcopal church” , Royal oak,MI and “troy church of god ,troy ,MI where in turn they organize the food distribution to homeless. She also partnered with Foodrescue US and work with local organizations and help them in food rescue with help of youth volunteers. Through her leadership , MYVA also mobilized delivery of 1000 PBJ sandwiches with help of youth volunteers to Gross pointe memorial church which was delivered to senior citizens.
She has lead and coordinated the delivery of 5000 Lbs of rescued healthy food.This program collected fresh , healthy food which are soon to expire and distribute it immediately with help of distribution locations in churches.
As part of meal delivery, She also collaborated with Meals on wheels troy (https://oaklandmow.org/) and deliver meals every month to senior citizens of troy.Meal delivery for senior citizen is for older adults who are home-bound and unable to prepare meals for themselves. A friendly hello and small talk can brighten the day for an aged citizens and can even save their life and cheer them.Till now she has lead and delivered around 650 meals to senior citizens as part of this program with help of MYVA.
During a regular school year, children have access to healthy food with programs like free breakfast, lunch and afterschool meals provided in schools. But during the summer, when schools are closed, those meals disappear. In order to fight hunger of kids who are deprived of meals in summer ,She lead a Can and bottle drive . She also lead a cereal drive a was able to raise and donate 500 Cereal boxes through this initiative for kids.
Most of projects that she initiated are for addressing Hunger needs and social connection of Senior citizens and Kids in society. Hunger is a problem that most often affects children from low-income families.coronavirus pandemic put a huge burden on already-struggling families,There is shortage in food distribution now due to pandemic as volunteering organization efforts have come drastically down due to safety of volunteers. She engaged youth volunteers actively for meal delivery to senior citizens and weekly surplus food rescue delivery to local churches.
