Akshitha Sahu

Troy

Hero Story

Akshitha is a passionate student who is truly committed to helping her community. It is only recently that I became aware of how much of an impact she has made on the people around her, even beyond the walls of the school building. That is because while her commitment to helping others shows clearly, she is not prone to bragging. She is not volunteering because she wants recognition or because she needs to beef up her college resume. She genuinely cares about the well-being of the planet and of the human beings she shares it with.

Starting with her impact in school, Akshitha’s drive to start a club that truly makes a difference in the world has inspired other students to join her. The eco bricks project she started was well-organized and was an awesome opportunity to try something cool and new while also helping the environment. Both her club and her talk show are well-made and well-executed awesome opportunities to advocate for the issues she cares about most. Her accomplishments are impressive for anyone, much less a teenager. And her ability to get guests that other students and community members respect to participate in things like her Earth Day Convention and Go Green talk show also garners a lot of interest and respect from other members of our school and community. It makes people pay attention, and allows her to make a greater impact.

What I hadn’t realized until recently is how much Akshitha volunteers outside of school, in addition to her efforts in the high school context. Her work creating a poetry workshop and summer camp, even keeping it running online during the pandemic, is such an amazing way to reach out to young children. I know Akshitha as a performer in the forensics club I help coach, but beyond being a performer herself she also takes the time to bring a love of poetry and self-expression to younger kids. Like with all her efforts, she doesn’t do things halfway. Working to publicize the work produced in her workshop is just another way that Akshitha increases the impact of the work she does.

And finally, of course, the hours that Akshitha puts in to volunteering with organizations like the Parks and Recreation Board of Troy, the Troy Historic Village, and the Stage Nature Center show that she doesn’t always need to be in charge in order to give back. When she sees a need or an opportunity for growth that is not currently being met or realized, she has the initiative and follow through to do something about it. But when she recognizes worthy efforts that are already underway, she is also ready and willing to lend her time and support to those causes. Akshitha wants to help, in whatever capacity is needed. That is one of the many reasons that she is deserving of this recognition.
