Detroit Pistons

Detroit

Hero Story

The Detroit Pistons are producing lasting change by investing in Detroit neighborhoods and the people who live there. By allowing Brilliant Detroit to purchase and renovate an abandoned home and turn it into an early childhood and family center, the Detroit Pistons will ensure that families with young children have what they need to be school ready, healthy and stable.
To understand the impact the Pistons are making, it is important to know a bit more about Brilliant Detroit's work in the city. Brilliant Detroit was founded in 2016 to provide a radically new approach to kindergarten readiness in neighborhoods by building a unique delivery model that transforms Detroit’s abandoned housing stock into early childhood and family centers throughout the city, each within a 20-minute walk of the people it serves.
Brilliant Detroit is committed to working “with, for, and by” our neighbors every step of the way. This includes entering a neighborhood after being invited by community leadership and conducting multiple listening sessions with our new neighbors. Once it establishes a hub, a local Advisory Team of participating families and other stakeholders who support with outreach is launched to provide ongoing feedback, and identifying and advancing neighborhood priorities. This model works because families in neighborhoods feel welcome at the hubs, staff come from the neighborhoods and are expert relationship-builders, and numerous opportunities exist for community input.
The neighborhood of Islandview approached Brilliant Detroit and the funding provided by the Pistons allowed us to move forward. What made this commitment even more special is the fact that this organization's involvement did not end with its financial contribution. It recognizes the impact its employees can have through volunteerism. As noted previously, over 100 of its employees spent the day removing debris, sticks and weeds, mowing the lawn, and distributing fliers throughout the whole neighborhood notifying people about the new hub. Once the Islandview hub is open for business, we are confident that the Pistons and its employees will remain active volunteers, supporting programming and events at its hub.
