Hero Story
Background: Due to the recession and after Detroit filed for bankruptcy, many people developed negative image of the Detroit which often included crime, gunshots, and abandoned homes worth one dollar. When people think about Michigan, they think about Detroit. Even people I know personally have not set foot in Detroit since 2008. Our mission is to change the image of Detroit and Michigan as a whole starting with this generation.
Although Astrid joined our organization not for too long but she has dedicated tremendous hours to Live in Michigan.
As an Editor in Chief, she writes/edits/publishes news articles/videos regarding Michigan living on two most popular social media platforms for the Chinese community: Little Redbook and WeChat*. Recruits and mentors high school students. In addition to volunteering, she grew her team from one person to over thirty people to promote local businesses to the Chinese communities.
Astrid impact is huge, via social media, in Chinese communities, she shares Michigan stories with the younger generation. She provides information about all aspects of Michigan life in terms of social events, activities, education, lifestyles. She recruits many young volunteers. She also trains and encourages them to join the mission. She designs the task of taking advantage of new telnets to share and speak to advocate for Michigan.
Due to her involvement, our social media team has grown to become the number one in Michigan for Asian immigration. When counting student volunteers in Live in Michigan club in Troy High School, we have more than 30 members in the group (aged 20 or less). Under her leadership, we have over 2500 Asian fans from Michigan and the number is growing as we speak.
The reason that I believe she deserves this hero award is to encourage and set an example for other younger people like Astrid to follow. I think it is in our best interest for our state government to fully support the initiative and motivation of individuals in order make Michigan a better place to stay. I, as a founder of the organization, I do see the future of Michigan through their actions. Those young people will be the ones that write the story of Michigan moving forward.
Offline, her team is responsible for hosting “I love Michigan” social events to appreciate what Michigan offers.
With her efforts, many young Michiganders feel happier, more active and more appreciative of Michigan life.
Here are some quotes from individuals describing the nominee's impact:
