Antionette Buckley

Flint

Hero Story

Since 2017, Antionette has gone above and beyond to create a positive, welcoming environment for others. By volunteering with Communities First, Inc., she has served over 100 hours and over 30 community events.

She joined the Gardening Club, in 2017, and volunteered to take care of the community garden which provides free foods for. She was motivated to learn more and completed an MSU Extension course. Now as a Master Gardener, Antionette helps to lead the strategic planning and care for the community garden. She has trained 10 community members to support this project.

Antionette is also a volunteer member of the Holiday Party Committee. Motivated by her interest in creating fun, engaging opportunities for community members to spend time together, Antionette has helped plan, promote and decorate for parties and is planning more in 2022. Similarly, Antionette leads the Birthday Club for residents. She wanted everyone to feel seen and celebrated on their birthdays, and she is motivated to build connections in her building. From handwritten cards and cupcakes to surprise parties, Antionette is committed to recognizing each of her 60 neighbors on their special day. Through her work as a Resident Coach at Carriage Town Ministry, Antionette is acutely aware of how important one’s social network is to their overall health and wellbeing.

Beyond her volunteerism as a CFI resident, Antionette has volunteered at dozens of community events for families over the last five years. She has been active in community clean ups and litter pick up competitions, supported cultural immersion events and helped host arts education opportunities as well as served on planning committees for the African American Film Series and our Green Life environmental programming. When she is not volunteering at CFI programs, she has helped expand organizational capacity at the CFI headquarters and even packed surprise treat bags for elementary schoolers. While this impressive list speaks to Antionette’s passion for volunteerism, it is not exhaustive. She does so much more – from helping new mothers and cooking meals for her neighbors to walking new tenants across the property – that she never expects to be recognized for.

Antionette’s has produced lasting change for Communities First, Inc. through her active and diverse volunteer efforts. She motivates others to join in and volunteer with her passion for the work and her commitment to making the world a better place for the people around her. As someone who has engaged with our services as a participant, she has a unique lens that she brings to facilitating our community empowerment programs. Informed by her lived experiences, she meets people with the empathy and understanding that makes a great volunteer but an even better leader.
