Birthbrite Foster Closet

Jackson

Hero Story

Monique and Tia are the sisters behind Jackson's Foster Closet, Birthbrite. They both knew there was a need for a resource that focused on local children in foster care. This new resource operates through donations. The foster closet has clothes for a range of sizes and ages, baby essentials, such as diapers and car seats, educational toys, games, hygiene products, books and so much more. It’s really amazing to see all of the donated items and products they have collected in such a short amount of time.

Birthbrite Foster Closet is equipped to assist youth and caregivers of children in foster care during times of immediate need. Arriving foster children can be any age. Caregivers might not be totally prepared to take in the child that will soon be at their door, but that child may not have anywhere else to go that night. Being able to provide needed items for free can be a relief for both the child and caregiver.

Birthbrite has already proudly served many local foster children and foster families. They have been able to distribute over 8,200 articles of seasonally appropriate, in-style clothing. Over 200 packs of diapers have been asked for and received by foster families in Jackson County of Michigan (this includes relative caregivers who have acquired legal guardianship to keep relative children from entering or staying in foster care). Last year Birthbrite hosted 4 events that provided in-person support and items that focused on education, fun, and whole-body health and wellness for foster children.

These ladies are doing work that directly benefits a population that has been unheard, underserved, and has had difficulty accessing resources. Both having been foster parents has given them each individual, distinctive perspectives on the unique needs of children in foster care and how to best serve them. Their desire to come alongside youth and families as they navigate the Michigan foster care system comes from longing for those services themselves when they were actively fostering. They came full circle, when they launched their nonprofit to address the widespread issues children in foster care and the families that serve them often face.
