Hero Story

Frank Early is a simple guy who says he just likes to help out. He's retired, has teenage boys and a wife who is supportive of his special volunteer activity. Frank became a volunteer with the Michigan Community Service Commission to help others out during the pandemic. He became an important volunteer to the MCSC because of his willingness to use his truck and trailer to pick up large personal protective equipment (PPE) and deliver it to nonprofits to keep people safe and ensure services could continue throughout the early part of the pandemic starting in 2020 and continuing into 2022. He would actually drive materials across the state and always did so happily and never wanted reimbursement for the gas expense. His efforts enabled the MCSC to support hundreds of nonprofits with PPE that was so scarce at the time and without his efforts, many agencies would not have been able to continue services to their clients without the safety supplies.

As the pandemic went on, the need for PPE changed and early in the Afghan Resettlement efforts, companies were offering large donations of PPE again. Once again, Frank was there to happily load items in his truck and trailer and transport them to resettlement agencies to ensure refugees and those helping them were well stocked with hand sanitizer, masks and cleaning supplies. He has helped to support five corporations make donations and has helped four resettlement agencies who have supported nearly 600 refugees to date.

When Benton Harbor also needed PPE to support the residents impacted by the lead in the municipal water in late 2021, he was happy to bring the partners there large amounts of PPE to ensure the safety of everyone involved. His efforts ensured that the 2,000 residents impacted by the water, had access to hand sanitizer and masks that also supported the water distribution events.

The biggest difference he made was to serve as the transportation to ensure PPE was delivered quickly and efficiently from donors to agencies so that help would be available to Michigan residents from 2020-2022.
