Danielle Hilliker

Detroit

Hero Story

Danielle Hilliker is the CEO and Executive Director of Southeastern Michigan Health Association, and concurrently serves as the Executive Director for Joy-Southfield Community Development Center until the search for a new Interim Director is completed. Over the past 7 years, Danielle has progressively advanced in her career and service to her community. She worked with community residents to develop a community garden and partnered with Forgotten Harvest to establish a community store to harvest and sell produce. This provides opportunities for strengthening economic empowerment and creates jobs that benefit community residents, all while investing in the health of the individuals in the community.

The project at Joy-Southfield Community Development Center catapulted to another dimension. While conducting interviews for employment, Danielle and her staff recognized the need to address those social determinants of health and health disparities that were plaguing the region. Danielle worked with a nexus of community partners to deliver outcomes that have been both sustainable and practical in nature. And now, as the CEO and Executive Director for SEMHA, Danielle, has been recognized by Crain's Business Detroit as one of America's thought leaders and progressive visionaries. I believe that her work as a leader has given our organization the shift that it needs to strengthen community development and generate global wealth.

I know that Danielle's work with the State of Michigan and the 8 counties serviced by SEMHA is helping to shape the work that the healthcare jurisdictions are providing in vaccine equity, diversity and inclusion, healthy initiatives for women and girls, and social justice. I am delighted to recognize her work and recommend her for the Heroes Service Impact Award.
