Cherry Health's COVID-19 response team heroes sprang into action immediately when COVID-19 first became a threat to the community. The team has grown and developed since March 2020 helping to test and vaccinate the community. Their heroic effort started right outside of our Heart of the City Health Center where these heroes braved the extreme cold and high winds in order to provide COVID-19 testing for the community. Later, service was expanded and moved into the parking garage for a quick and easy drive-thru experience for patients. Now, the team is a well-oiled machine! Their efforts have spread far and wide.
In addition to the COVID-19 drive-thru (which also is open on Saturdays), the team also has a mobile vaccination unit that has been all around the community providing COVID-19 vaccines at partner organizations across the city. This essential piece of the puzzle is where the team goes above and beyond! The team serves nights and weekends helping connect our community's most vulnerable residents to ensure they have access to lifesaving COVID-19 vaccines. Since populations such as unhoused individuals in Grand Rapids and migrant farmworkers throughout Kent County experience barriers to accessing these life-saving vaccines, Cherry Health's mobile unit was able to remove that barrier and meet individuals exactly where they are at. Additionally, the team has also partnered with schools in the greater Grand Rapids area to provide COVID-19 vaccines right at the schools.
This team was featured several times on local media outlets and was honored with an award from Exodus Place in Grand Rapids that highlighted Cherry Health's commitment to vulnerable unhoused individuals. Additionally, Cherry Health received COVID-19 testing and COVID-19 data reporting designation from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). To date, the team has provided over 22,000 COVID-19 tests and COVID-19 vaccines for over 10,000 individuals! All of this effort was led by our amazing Dr. Jenny Bush, Director of pediatrics and COVID Response, who has championed all of Cherry Health's COVID-19 efforts.
