Hero Story

Lt. Col. Roger Knopf first served our community with his time in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War as an F4 Pilot and with the first Calvary. He served as the Quarter Master of VFW Post 3195 for many years and as an officer of the Muskegon County Council, VFW for several years. He has participated in over 850 funerals for veterans in Muskegon County as part of the honor guard. He was a leader of the Muskegon County Memorial Day and Veteran Day programs for many years.

In the last year, Roger has been serving our community for COVID-19 at several testing sites and clinics. Even at the age of 90 years old, Roger still finds time to volunteer at almost every single volunteer opportunity that the United Way of the Lakeshore has to offer. He is a current AmeriCorps Seniors member with the RSVP program. Through RSVP, he has been an education docent at the Muskegon Lakeshore Museum Center.

Roger also helped in leadership roles for Toastmasters for Muskegon County clubs, a nonprofit that promotes communication, public speaking and leadership. He is always the first one to arrive and the last one to leave. He has been an active member of Muskegon Heights High School Alumni Association providing support for present students. Roger is a true treasure in our community. The impact made by his thousands of hours as a volunteer in his lifetime is immeasurable. His service to our country is priceless.
