In The Beginning: First Ward Project
Flint
Hero Story
Jamelle Glover is the Founding Director of the non-profit organization, In The Beginning: First Ward Project, located on the north side of Flint, Michigan. North Flint has most drastically been impacted by events and circumstances that have made life for residents extraordinarily challenging. People like Jamelle make up the heart of the community, those who are committed to their neighbors' well-being, and gladly and graciously take on the mantle of positive neighborhood involvement and progress. Jamelle was born and raised in north Flint, specifically in the first ward. Flint is broken up into 9 wards, ward one being the northwest section of the city. As a proud first ward resident, Jamelle deeply believes in creating hyper-local impact, first serving those closest to you; he does this through his organization, In The Beginning: First Ward Project.
When the pandemic first hit in early 2020, Jamelle immediately partnered with other local organizations, as well as private volunteers, to provide face masks to those in his “inner-pocket”, as he likes to call it. He and his team distributed hundreds of masks door to door to people who may not have otherwise had access. He then tackled cleaning supplies and disinfectants using the same model – door-to-door distribution. Wherever he goes, he still carries a supply of masks, ready to distribute wherever needed. When the Covid-19 vaccine became available, he partnered with local health organizations to bring mobile units directly into neighborhoods, again providing services to hundreds of residents who may not otherwise have access, often serving the homeless and other vulnerable populations. He and his organization have made a substantial impact toward mitigating the effects of Covid-19 in the most vulnerable, and resilient, Flint communities; yet this is only part of his mission. Jamelle works tirelessly to serve those in his “inner-pocket”, providing a broad array of opportunities including educational resources, athletics, youth mentoring, affordable housing, and more. His vision for his neighborhood and community is bright, and his work ethic is strong. This is only…the beginning!
