Mary Armstrong

Sault Ste. Marie

Hero Story

Mary Armstrong has been an AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP volunteer since 2017. Her passion for service is shown in her selflessness to give back to her community. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, she has remained loyal to her community. After the shutdown, she came back to serve in a safe way with the same positive attitude as always. Due to the pandemic, we have a virtual studio set up to allow reading buddies to record videos of them reading for children. Mary has shown up for her community in other ways too. She was a part of Chippewa County Project Backpack as a lead volunteer from start to finish. She was there to help stuff backpacks with school supplies and at the main event to get the backpacks to children throughout the EUP. In total, Mary has recorded 42 stories for us in 2021. Altogether, she has volunteered 56 hours for United Way of the EUP and RSVP.

One of the highlights of AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP is to see the connection between two generations. Some seniors do not have grandchildren or are unable to see them regularly, just as some children do not have grandparents or are unable to see them regularly. Mary has brought this to light in her connection with a local child. During the Project Backpack stuffing event, a child explained how he connected with Mary and felt like she was a grandmother. Even her hugs reminded him of his grandma!
