Hero Story
This amazing group of volunteers serves their community whenever a need arises. The Mid-Michigan Area Labor Council which covers Arenac, Bay, Gratiot, Huron, Saginaw, Sanilac, and Tuscola counties brings together individuals from labor along with their families, friends, and allies to positively impact their communities. The Mid-Michigan Area Labor Council has a long history of community engagement and Saginaw United Way Labor Liaison, Steve Lamb’s expertise in organizing opportunities ensures the impact is felt by those who are in need of assistance.
Grants are secured each year to enable volunteers to build 10-12 accessibility ramps to area homes within their community annually. These ramps have a lasting impact on the recipient and their family as their life is forever changed when they can freely come and go from their home.
Before and during the pandemic one to two times a month, on average, food distribution trucks were brought into the community to fill a need that was heightened during the pandemic.
When it was time for school, no child could be left behind. One hundred backpacks were filled and distributed to children in local shelters.
Recently, they partnered with Genesee County to pack 50,000 meals in just two hours. Those meals were distributed to Bay, Genesee, and Saginaw Counties.
2021 was the first year they sponsored a Project Independence Woman of Labor ramp build. This entire ramp project was done with organized labor volunteers.
The work that they are able to accomplish together is nothing short of heroic. If you need to get something done, this is the group to make it happen.
