Rose Mary and Wayne Nelson

Grayling

Hero Story

Rose Mary Nelson has been a RSVP volunteer since 2009 and her husband, Wayne has been a RSVP volunteer since 2011. They both run and oversee the Baby To Toddler Closet at Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church in Grayling. Though they both have volunteered in different areas of service with RSVP throughout the years, the baby closet has been their main focus for most of those years. The closet is open twice a month to underprivileged parents with children from the ages of infancy to kindergarten age. New and gently used items are donated to the closet. These items include clothes, shoes, toys, books, diapers, strollers, playpens, and handmade items by volunteers, such as blankets, clothes, pillows, hats, and mittens.

Volunteers assist the parent to get the items they may need at the time for their child. There is a core group of volunteers who serve that go through items, clean them, organize and display the items. Receipts are collected from individuals for the Spartan Family Fair Direct Dollar program. Once enough receipts are collected, they can be turned in for money to purchase the items and diapers which are always needed. Volunteers spend countless hours going through and organizing the receipts. Rose Mary and Wayne spend hours at the closet and many more hours of their own time running errands for the closet, picking up items, and networking to receive more donations and grant money. They take great pride in the service provided to families that come to the closet for assistance. They are kind, generous, and caring individuals who serve their community and expect nothing in return. They show love and compassion to those that enter the Baby To Toddler Closet and serve with a smile. Rose Mary and Wayne Nelson are definitely Michigan Heroes.
