Mike Brown

Grand Rapids

Hero Story

Since 2018 when Mike Brown joined AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP of Kent County, it was evident he has a passion for helping people. Mike’s career involved assisting people from all walks of life and now in retirement, as an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer, he has been able to take his passion and life skills and share them through his service. His kindness and outspokenness speak volumes through the multiple ways he has served and continues to volunteer for new opportunities.

For this nomination, RSVP would particularly like to recognize Mike’s service with our Home Heating and Property Homestead Tax Credit preparation program. He was instrumental in spearheading the program from its rollout in 2019, when he especially enjoyed meeting with the clients and getting to know them. When the pandemic eliminated in-person meetings in 2020, Mike welcomed the opportunity to pivot to remote service to continue assisting these clients and share ideas and feedback for improving that engagement. This was overwhelmingly a success!

For the 2020 tax year, Mike single-handedly served over forty clients and provided an average of six hundred dollars in refunds to these clients. Without Mike’s generosity with his time and knowledge, many of these clients would not have received the benefits of these tax credits. The program targets low-income seniors who otherwise do not need to file taxes and are often unaware of their eligibility for these two credits. Clients are constantly sharing about how getting these refunds has increased their financial security and how they are forever grateful for Mike’s assistance in enabling them to receive these credits.

Thank you, Mike, for putting your values into action with AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP. Kent County is a better place because you made RSVP part of your volunteer journey.
