Brian Methner

Kalamazoo

Hero Story

In 2015, I was working as a road sergeant for the Michigan State Police Paw Paw Post when I first met Brian Methner. He and I were closing on a loan through his business, Kalamazoo Mortgage, when the conversation turned to an upcoming Shop with a Cop event I was planning. Brian became extremely interested and ended up personally funding the event that year. From that simple conversation, a lifelong relationship between a private corporation and a public entity was born.

As the years went by, Brian and I began conceptualizing and then ultimately establishing a nonprofit focused on helping the citizens that the Michigan State Police serve. Brian was simultaneously working on starting his own nonprofit focused on supporting police, fire, and military veterans. Ultimately, our efforts resulted in the formation of S.T.O.P. (State Trooper Outreach Partnership) and the Kalamazoo Mortgage Hero Salute Foundation. Since starting the foundation in 2016, Brian has not looked back and has given so much to the surrounding Kalamazoo community. Through the work of the Kalamazoo Mortgage Hero Salute Foundation, over $700,000.00 has been donated to police, fire, and military veterans. For example, in 2021 the foundation donated $15,000 to the Michigan State Police Paw Paw Post to replace outdated AEDs. This generous donation helped outfit all MSP cars from the post with life-saving AEDs.

The Kalamazoo Mortgage Hero Salute Foundation has generously supported S.T.O.P. with financial donations which have had a tremendous impact on some citizens of our community. For example, these donations helped fund the following:

-Building a handicap ramp for a man who lost his leg to diabetes.
-Paying for karate classes for a youth that was struggling with discipline issues and always wanted to attend classes, but the cost was not financially feasible for his parents.
-Financially helping a family pay for heat right before it was shut off for nonpayment.
-Purchasing bikes for two boys that had their bikes stolen the night prior.
-Providing diapers, wipes, etc. for KRESA during COVID shortages.

When I think of the difficult world we live in and I try to imagine a solution for the issues we face, I truly believe partnerships like those between government and local partners is imperative. Countless lives have been changed and impacted by the time, money, and effort given by Brian Methner and his team at Kalamazoo Mortgage.
