Stephanie Denard
Grand Rapids
Hero Story
Stephanie Denard served our Foster Grandparent volunteers during the difficult COVID-19 pandemic year (2020-2021 a year and one half) that Senior Neighbors was closed. She has been a wonderful program supervisor for over 6 years, and ensures all volunteers are well taken care of.
During the pandemic, Stephanie went above and beyond the call of duty, delivering PPE bags and food boxes with meals for the volunteers, regardless of the conditions of the pandemic. She sanitized, masked up, and away she would go, decorating their porches and doors with food boxes, PPE equipment, Christmas packages, and more. She ensured every single volunteer was taken care of despite the pandemic, and her heroism took over and she ensured all volunteer needs were met. During the recognition and for Christmas deliveries, she dressed in a Santa dress and hat and made the event fun and enjoyable while serving volunteer needs. Stephanie made countless deliveries; even if the volunteers were not at home, she persevered and returned on another day. Her goal was to ensure they had enough food to eat and all the PPE supplies they needed, even toilet paper when there was little in supply. She served all 51 volunteers and maintained food deliveries throughout until the supply was depleted a few months ago.
In addition to the food deliveries, Stephanie contacted every volunteer on a weekly basis to determine needs while ensuring their health and safety. Volunteers were so grateful for the calls as well, as many became isolated and lonely and longed for someone to talk with and support them during this difficult time. Stephanie fulfilled many requests for the volunteers on her own making sure all needs were met, and even when the pandemic had worsened, she refused to give up on the volunteer's health and safety. She discovered a couple of volunteers had serious health issues, so she ensured they received the assistance as soon as possible and maintained checks to ensure their safety.
Stephanie is definitely a hero, for even during the worst of the pandemic, she masked up, sanitized, and put the volunteers first. She was typically on the frontlines and put volunteer needs first, along with their health,, safety, and well-being. She is a true hero and I am so proud of her!
