Detroit Indian Women's Assoc.
South Lyon
Hero Story
Detroit Indian Women's Association (DIWA) has been working nonstop to uplift women since its inception. They believe in empowering women through opportunities. When COVID-19 hit in 2020, DIWA switched its role to help not just women, but the community in its entirety.
Their initiatives during the pandemic included:
-putting together and donating over 500 care packages across health clinics and shelters
-making over 4000 masks with support from volunteers and other organizations
-distributing over 3000 PPE kits to healthcare workers across the state of Michigan
-collaborating with Kroger pharmacy to distribute free flue-shots in times of uncertainty and fear
DIWA did not hesitate for a minute to be on the frontlines with its volunteers when it mattered the most and the community needed them.
Apart from COVID-centric initiatives, DIWA has constantly been contributing to the society and community in general.
-They brought together women entrepreneurs through events such as WOW for International Women's Day. Not only that, they have successfully established an Indian Fashion Week in Michigan to help women business owners to showcase their skill and talent and have gone a step further to make it inclusive by having healthcare workers walk the ramp for the designers. This was a powerful event in helping all healthcare workers who have been on the frontlines for the last 18 months and gave them an opportunity to relax and feel good outside their work alone.
-DIWA has collaborated with SEWA International USA to donate masks and hygiene kits.
-DIWA has also collected donations from Meijer, SAAVI, and MIINDIA to prepare meal packages.
DIWA at its core is driven by making a difference in this community and they will continue to empower all people in this society in any way, shape, or form.
