Detroit Indian Women's Association
South Lyon
Hero Story
When the pandemic hit, DIWA–Detroit India Women Association–came into action to support all communities and did an amazing job that impressed me.
They made and distributed more than 500 masks to senior citizens, nursing homes, and hospitals. They also made 500 food packages and distributed them to senior homes and to people who were unable to leave their homes due to medical reasons or problems. Upon realizing how COVID-19 was affecting women and families, DIWA started weekly virtual game nights for 2 hours once a week where there was a lot of social interaction on zoom meetings and we played games, sang songs, and told jokes. This was a very big help to stay balanced.
Among other things they've done, they:
-Collaborated with pharmacies to distribute flu vaccines
-Collected donations and made hundreds of hygiene packages for girls
-Helped local businesses stay open during the pandemic by coaching online business development and marketing
-They also did a virtual fashion show to promote businesses and keep the people motivated
The most special thing I found was unity, strength, and the motivational spirit to never give up in any situation. They've also taught others to look at only the positivity of each situation and have faith in each other.
