Esther Land
Grand Rapids
Hero Story
Esther Land founded Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of Michigan, (MG-MI) in 1976 and has worked tirelessly as a volunteer in the organization for the past 45 years. Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a chronic, debilitating, autoimmune, neuromuscular condition that causes the nerves to stop communicating with the muscles. There are treatments but no cure. Many people discover they have MG when they have double vision or ptosis (eye droop), experience weakness in their arms or legs, or they can no longer eat, chew, swallow or speak and sometimes breathe.
Esther has Myasthenia Gravis herself and has spent the last 45 years with a singular focus of educating, mentoring, and connecting people with MG and their concerned family members to medical experts, resources, support groups, and connection to others with MG for support and understanding. Many people with MG are also immunocompromised due to the medication that they take to treat MG. In 2020 and 2021, there was a large focus on protecting those with MG during the pandemic due to this aspect.
I nominate Esther Land for a Michigan Hero Award for her 45 years of serving the 1500 people with MG in Michigan. Esther is now eighty years old and plans on continuing to volunteer for our organization.
