Pat Munshaw is a retired 81-year-old registered nurse (RN) who stepped forward to volunteer to help deliver COVID vaccine shots.
Pat volunteers three times a week through both the Ingham County Health Department and Sparrow hospital, and has delivered more than 500 COVID vaccine injections.
Munshaw earned an undergraduate degree in nursing nearly 60 years ago, and went on to earn a graduate degree in health care administration. Pat still holds her RN license.
“I actually had not given a shot in 55 years,” Munshaw said. “But it’s like riding a bike because you are never going to forget how to do it.
It was a simple decision to volunteer because I have the time, I have the skill set, and they needed help.”
Munshaw actively recruited other volunteers to help at vaccine sites. Pat voluntarily serves on the boards of several Lansing area charitable service organizations. She believes everybody can do something to help others and there are endless opportunities to volunteer, but most people often just don’t know where to start.
“I like the socialization and mental stimulation you get while volunteering,” Munshaw said. “Volunteering is really fun and fulfilling to me.”
At the vaccine site, Pat sits on a stool with wheels and rolls from person to person.
“My technique is to treat the shot like throwing a dart,” Munshaw said proudly. “I hit the muscle, do it fast, in and out – no pain. Everybody is happy.”
