GM Project M Team

Hero Story

When General Motors employees were faced with the opportunity to protect our communities from Covid-19, they acted with purpose and integrity to achieve unprecedented results. They understood the value of the work being done and, through pure altruism, created a safe environment for hospitals, schools, emergency responders and nonprofits. These employees volunteered for Project M.

Project M, our name for GM's effort to produce and distribute face masks, N95 masks and other Personal Protective Equipment into the Michigan and Ohio communities, was a drastic pivot from our normal business operations. Using resources from manufacturing, communications, public policy, corporate giving and legal departments, Project M deployed over 5,000 GM employee volunteers to make and deliver PPE and these volunteers produced and delivered 7.1 million flat masks, 32,700 N95 masks, 2,073 gowns, 252 aerosol boxes and 288,598 shields. The monetized value of our volunteers was $1.09 million dollars and the value of items donated was $2.9 million dollars. PPE was delivered to over 53 hospitals, police and fire stations, nonprofits and government buildings as well as all 55 school districts in Michigan.

As we completely shifted our employee volunteer program from traditional non-profit partnerships to Project M, employees understood the importance of mask making for our communities and took the challenge head-on. Some employees took on enormous tasks: volunteering hundreds of hours and driving as far as the Western UP. These employees understood that when we look back at the Covid-19 pandemic, they were the ones that helped save lives.
