Ms. Mignon L. Hayes

Hero Story
Mignon L. Hayes has been an Educator and Mentor for over 45 years! She is passionate about English and Language Arts (ELA) instruction, both to students and teachers. Her complex and multilayered career served her well as the Southfield Public Schools Department Chairperson, where she used her expertise to design, write and oversee the crafting and vertical alignment of ELA curriculum. Overall, she is passionate about making sure all students are prepared to succeed, whether in the English classroom or on the ACT, PSAT, SAT, and NWEA tests, tirelessly coaching instructors to teach the grammar and punctuation that allows students to excel.
During her ten-years of coaching she supported teachers in “high priority” schools. She increased capacity and helped teachers properly implement data informed instruction. She was the ELA arm of the instructional team that raised scores at Crockett Technical H.S. and at Inkster High School to enable them to be removed from the state’s PLA list. She also helped to improve the ELA sections of standardized tests at Mumford, Pontiac High, Pontiac Academy for Excellence, and Ecorse High. Recently, she developed innovative methods to organize and present ACT and PLAN data so that the information is easily understood by parents and students. Additionally, she developed instructional strategies to assist students achieve passing scores on the new ACT and SAT essays and be better prepared for college.
Throughout her career, Ms. Hayes has taught a countless number of students from all walks of life. Her students have achieved professional success in a variety of fields, including business, law, health care, and engineering. Inspired by her impact on their lives, many of her students have become educators themselves.
Ms. Hayes’ nurturing, fun personality helped her connect with students and create bonds that last well beyond their high school careers. She became a second mom and dedicated supporter to so many; going the extra mile to make sure her students had the knowledge, resources, and encouragement to succeed in school and in the real world.
She is a mentor and friend who is present in our lives with caring words and an uncanny ability to know just when encouragement is needed. Currently, she has Stage 2 Multiple Myeloma cancer, but that has not prevented her from continuing to be a fierce advocate for others, lifting our efforts when we tire. She is willing to call out injustice and oppression and consistently works to enhance opportunities that support people with developing their lives as they wish. She has become a role model to me, and I appreciate her welcoming me in as part of her family.
Mignon is a beloved hero whose legacy will live on in the numerous people she has taught and supported for decades.
