Rob O'Connor
Lansing
Hero Story
Ron has been a dedicated volunteer, serving others for most of his life (Ron is in his eighties). Ron was a significant influence in moving the original First Presbyterian Church food pantry from a small closet organization to a more extensive operation, serving over 6,000 people a year. Ron has been unselfishly running the pantry for over 20 years, ensuring that he fills any gaps. As the pantry's director, Ron oversees all day-to-day operations, making sure that: food orders are processed promptly, volunteers are present and sufficiently trained, all health and safety regulations are being followed, and all clients and staff are treated respectfully.
Ron's leadership style is that of someone who wants to empower others to use their gifts in positive and beneficial ways. He listens to other people's perspectives and includes all different thoughts and outlooks when trying to decide how to make changes. He cares that all people are shown respect. Ron spends his time and energy serving others. He is at the church almost every day, making sure things are working well and that everyone, clients and volunteers, is well cared for. He makes sure all safety and other rules are followed, but his enforcement of those rules is always done kindly and respectfully. He encourages all of his people to treat all people well. Ron O'Connor is a good and faithful servant and has been one throughout his lifetime. As long as he is able, I'm sure that he will continue to care for the community around him.
