Jenny Thurber

Lansing

Hero Story

Jenny coordinates, leads, and participates in many volunteer events throughout the year, with students, staff, and faculty participants. This year due to the pandemic, Jenny pivoted and was innovative in reaching and engaging students. She created and developed the Act of Kindness kits to give students positive notes, helpful information on resources, packaged snacks, etc. During this challenging year, Jenny coordinated food drives and the Adopt a Family program, while also finding time to participate in soup kitchens in the community and coordinating a socially distanced Breast Cancer Awareness event for the Davenport campus.

Somehow, Jenny also finds time to participate on the volunteer committee for Capital Area United Way. She volunteers her time on the NACW national chapter board. Since the pandemic, Jenny takes it upon herself to decorate the campus for those able to work and attend classes in person. Jenny volunteers her time with several of the student life groups and offers guidance and support at organized events. She also volunteers her time in assisting students in The National Society of Leadership and Success group and assists in the training and guidance of this group. Jenny is a role model for others in giving back and has a true passion for the care of others. Jenny went out of her way to advocate for resources and to be able to meet the needs of our students as they navigated these challenging times. She is a fantastic listener, and when you are in her presence, you know that you have her undivided attention. With these essential characteristics, Jenny gives others hope.
