Avery Grace Karber
St. Johns
Hero Story
Avery Grace Karber has embraced a mission to solve community problems & improve quality of life with a focus on impoverished youth, and has become a catalyst for change in the St. Johns Community. As a sophomore, Avery researched food insecurity and toured student pantries in Traverse City to address her community's challenges. Avery was on a small team that created a food insecurity educational campaign to raise awareness & support basic youth needs. Avery was then a key leader in establishing a student basic needs pantry at her high school.
The following summer, Avery attended the Michigan Community Foundation's Youth Leadership Conference at CMU. She and four other students worked the rest of the summer to introduce a St. Johns Chapter of the Youth Action Committee (YAC). Because of her efforts, the St. Johns community now has a foundational program, YAC, that will teach youth about the values of philanthropy, inclusion, & education, and engage them in the grant-making of $20,000 to our local nonprofits each year. Avery has a passion for serving a diverse group of people in need. She has a natural empathy for classmates and community members going through hard times, with an unrelenting work ethic & passion for making a difference in their lives.
