Hero Story

Just as Michigan was heading into lockdown in 2020, Cam Underdown began initial development of mycovidresponse.org as a way to try to engage various networks of volunteers in a safe, coordinated manner. On March 14, 2020 Cam released the initial version of the website he created via his social media channels. Chris Powers, a fellow Oakland University graduate and friend of Cam's, saw Cam's Facebook post concerning My Covid Response and called Cam to discuss what this website could mean to the community. The two men immediately began partnering together in this effort. By mid-March 2020, the My COVID Response network had grown to include more than 200 volunteers. On March 20, 2020 the first new partners began registering via the website and joining the effort. On March 31, 2020 the United Way awarded more than $300,000 to collaborative effort between Oakland University, Pontiac Community Foundation, and Lighthouse of Michigan to support the COVID Response Network collaborative effort. Over 300 households in the system were receiving support at that point. By May 1, 2020 over 1000 households and 800 volunteers were added to the database, as well as over 100 community leaders and 65 organizations. Through this growing partnership, an average of 70,000 meals per week were being delivered. On June 15, 2020 co-founders Chris Powers and Cam Underdown began prototyping the next generation of tools to deliver resources to families throughout Oakland County. By fall 2020 The Covid Response Network Surpassed 20,000 food deliveries coordinated – each delivery representing a week's worth of food to a family in need in continued partnership with Lighthouse of Michigan and our other network partners. As of May 13, 2021 My Covid Response partners have coordinated 44,593 food deliveries – and counting.

It is my sincere hope that you will consider this nomination in support of Cam, Chris and My Covid Response because their efforts, ideas, and sacrifices have truly been "heroic" in many senses of the word.
