Student Veterans, MSU Chapter

East Lansing

Hero Story

The MSU chapter of the Student Veterans of America goes above and beyond in their already busy lives to create a welcoming environment for transitioning service members. Each year, a new group of leaders are elected by their peers to advance veteran and military needs at MSU. They spend many hours each week working with student veterans, sitting on councils representing veteran needs, and working with school administrators to develop veteran-friendly policy.

Their service impacts around 400 student veterans and about 2,000 military connected students overall, which includes active duty, Guard, reserve, and dependents. An example of their service includes working one on one with military-affiliated students to create a transition plan. Essentially, they serve as a peer advising group for current and incoming students. Their success has been shown to improve student veteran graduation rates (and overall success rates). Transitioning from the military to MSU is an important experience and these MSU students diligently serve that mission.
