Detroit Hives is a 501c3 nonprofit organization working to improve underserved communities for people and pollinators. Under the leadership of Timothy Paule Jackson and Nicole Lindsey, two Detroit natives, they have developed a triple bottom line solution for addressing blight, economic opportunity and the decline of pollinators within the State of Michigan. They have helped revitalize well over six vacant lots within the City of Detroit to now serve as a green spaces for people and pollinators.
The mission of Detroit Hives is to help eliminate inner city blight, combat food insecurity and provide local jobs for community residents. Through their Bee The Change they have educated well over 4,000 inner city youth on the importance of bee conservation within underserved communities. In less than five years, Detroit Hives has founded National Urban Beekeeping Day, and on July 21, 2021 HR Bill 141 was introduced by ten State Representatives and passed to declare July 19th as National Urban Beekeeping Day. In 2019, Detroit Hives has worked with the Gerald R Ford School to introduce and pass a resolution with Detroit City Council recognizing the City of Detroit as an official Bee City. Detroit Hives has established themselves in over 19 locations, managing over 8 million honeybees in the Detroit and Southeastern Michigan area. They have created a nationally impact, worked to address blight within inner city communities by creating a low cost sustainable solution.
