Heroes are being recognized for giving their time, talent, or treasures to make Michigan stronger and more resilient Heroes can be recognized for a specific service incident, a period of service, or a lifetime of service. Recognition can also be posthumous. Who Is Eligible to be Recognized? Michigan residents and organizations, as well as those who provide support to Michigan but live in another location. To be named a MI HERO the person or organization must demonstrate compassion and epitomize the concept of “service above self”. This award is not for those who advocate for and demonstrate violence, hatred, or racial prejudice. It is not for those who work against human rights, destroy our environment, and are motivated primarily for personal gain. Although civic and community engagement is important, the MI Hero award is not awarded because an individual is volunteering to elect a candidate or put forward a political or religious ideology. How are Honorees Selected? MI Heroes are selected by you the community. There is no selection process – only you completing the nomination form and telling their story. Once the nomination is received, it will be reviewed to ensure it meets the basic criteria listed above. Your hero will then be contacted to ensure they consent to be listed on the MI Heroes site. Please note that this is not a competition, and no prizes will be distributed. The State of Michigan reserves the right to remove stories throughout the process.
